They are somewhat common place here in South Texas and our guys aren't
fazed by them. They only spotted one on their trek, and it was just
snoozing about 8 feet off the trail. Didn't even move with 10 people
trekking by.
Side story, a SM friend of mine woke up one morning to the excited
calls of one of his Scouts. Seems that during the night a smallish 4
foot rattlesnake decided to fall asleep underneath a Scout's cot in a
wall tent. Better than a cup of coffee to wake up a SM. It ended just
fine for everyone except the snake. But that's a different story. ;-)
