Until this year I would have agreed with Jim. Then we went to summer
camp at Camp Fife of the Grand Columbia Council and experienced actual
food in a Scout camp. The ingredients were still pretty simple, but
the preparation made it special. Did you know that it is not actually
against the GSS to make fresh-baked biscuits and corn bread at a Scout
camp? Or that Scouts won't die if horseradish is served on the side
with the roast beef? Or that you can make the ground meat into
meatballs for the spaghetti instead of just dumping it into "meat
sauce"? Scrambled eggs don't have to taste like basketballs? Adding
chili to the hamburger and hot dog menu at lunch adds some spice?

You can have a great Scouting experience without good food (hello? is
anyone listening at Camp Parsons?)but good food really helps. I'm a
convert.
