RE: [Philmont]: Rattlesnakes

So many rattlesnakes are being killed in some parts of the country that mice
populations are exploding. In the grand canyon so many ratters are dead that
mice are overrunning some camps.

Leave them alone and you won't have mice and rats living with you.

No one has died of a rattlesnake bite in 100 years. Hurts, pain in the butt
yes, leaves a scar, yes, but won't kill you.

They are somewhat common place here in South Texas and our guys aren't fazed
by them. They only spotted one on their trek, and it was just snoozing about
8 feet off the trail. Didn't even move with 10 people trekking by.

Side story, a SM friend of mine woke up one morning to the excited calls of
one of his Scouts. Seems that during the night a smallish 4 foot rattlesnake
decided to fall asleep underneath a Scout's cot in a wall tent. Better than
a cup of coffee to wake up a SM. It ended just fine for everyone except the
snake. But that's a different story. ;-)
