RE: [Philmont]: Inedible Trail Food???

There was only one trail entrée and one base camp entrée I didn’t care for.

Trail: “Asian” Rice with Chicken (can’t recall the exact name);

Base camp: Chicken Fried Something. ;^)

I thought the Mexican Rice with Beef, and Refried Beans were pretty tasty
(considering where we were at the time).

I scored some perfectly good pop-tarts at a swap box. One of the epicurean
highlights of the trip!

Watch out for the Hooah bars – I lost a temporary crown to one of those bad
boys! ;^))

The trail food was better than the food at base camp! The only meal we
didn't care for was the black beans and rice. Other than that the food was
actually pretty good.

Over the years Ive always told my scouts camp food has only two
requirements: 1. it has to fill you up, and 2. it has to not kill you; if it
tastes good, thats a bonus. The food at Philmont fulfilled one and two,
with some bonus meals. No one I know goes to camp for the food, they go for
the unforgettable experiences, especially Philmont.

Pete and all --

I agree with Pete -- the food's not great, but certainly edible and
occasionally tasty (Chinese and Mexican). Our guys never complained (except
for our pseudo-vegetarian). The only thing approaching a complaint was that
there was not enough macaroni and cheese! We swapped out some items, but
mainly because we had too much food. The swap box was a useful tool for
lightening our food load.

As to the bear bags, we found thought they were fine, too. I would
recommend that you put your personal smellables in a waterproof bag (I used
a zip-loc), but the bear bags were strong and lightweight.

Maybe Pete and I were just lucky we left on 7/24!
