I thought the food this year was OK. Three lunches with tuna was a little
much, but no big deal. The biggest surprise was the refried beans. When I
looked at those flakes in the bag I thought there was no way I was going to
eat it, but it turned out to be the favorite dinner item for our crew.
The other advisor for our crew is a Marine that was in Kuwait before the war
started and then Iraq after the invasion. For several months they were
eating MREs 3 meals a day. She thought the Philmont food was great.
Jalapeno squeeze cheese is also included in MREs. One of the favorite
items. She would take it from anyone that did not want it and mix it with
just about anything. She also swears that when they were eating MREs all
the time you could trade jalapeno squeeze cheese for just about anything
including a tank.
I have better food than Philmont for most of my backpacking trips. But
considering cost, shelf life that it must have, and the quantity that they
have to deliver, I think Philmont does a fine job on food.
I would trade the great food I had today for Philmont food if I could be
back there on the trail this week.
