Another reference, http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic2143.htm, says
that, "The national average has been less than 4 deaths per year for
the last several years." It's not from this source, but I do remember
learning in college that most of the people who die from poisionous
critter bites of all kinds in the US (snakes, scorpions, spiders,
etc.) are either very young or allergic to the poision.
