Wanting to get Philmont type food experience? Then order from
Philmont. The info below is from the 2004 memo and the 2005 memo should
be out shortly. For those going in 2006 the menu will be available well
in advance of your 2006 trek.
A suggestion: order Phil-meals for your shakedowns and practice. Spend
some time thinking about how to make the meals better - bullion cubes,
spices, etc. Learn how to properly re-hydrate your meals. Think about
what you can add to particular meals. Decide on whether you want to do
one-pot or turkey bag cooking. Learn how to strip your meals for less
weight.
One example: the mac & cheese meal also has green beans. In the past
I've seen these mixed into a one-pot so you end up with pasta way past
/al dente/ and crunchy beans. This year we scrounged swap boxes for
extra cans of ham (one of the lunches) and took vegetable bullion cubes
as a part of our condiment kit. Then when we cooked this meal we used
separate turkey bags and made the beans in a broth. Added about five
cans of ham into the mac & cheese. All the green beans were eaten and
not a lick of the mac was left.
Our condiment kit included Tabasco, onion flakes, garlic powder, chicken
and vegetable cubes, Old Bay seasoning, butter buds and and salt and
pepper. Added less than a pound to crew gear.
