I agree with Mike on the Black Beans & Rice. It made the #1 slot for least
favorite meal on our trek critique sheet, but with that said, everyone
chowed down on the stuff. There was none left.
Personally, I liked it a lot. A couple others liked it, too, but the others
"toughed it out"... LOL. (FIDO!) To everyone's benefit, however, we did
bring some Taco Bell hot sauce packets on the trip. They helped immensely.
I just reinterate my thoughts of a few days ago... no matter how much
effort and attention is given to making trail meals the best they can be,
it's impossible for any organization, Philmont or otherwise, to bat 1.000
when it comes to satisfying everyone's personal tastes.
Can you imagine reading the critique sheet comments at the end of every
summer? Philmont probably get requests for everything from steak and
twice-baked potatoes on the trail to escalators for going up Baldy Mountain
or the south side of Trail Peak. Everything has to be taken with a grain of
salt, boiled down to "real commentary", then decided upon in a reasonable
manner. My guess is food has the longest list of comments, simply because
of everyone's personal tastes, and in some cases, people's inability or lack
of desire to enjoy what's put in front of them.

Funny, you seem to hear two dichotomies on the Black Beans and Rice meal.
Either you love it, or you hate it. Not much in-between. In our trek last
year, we had about 3/4 of the crew that said it was the BEST meal of all.
About 1/4 pronounced it disgusting. I wonder if it is more of a regional
thing about food preferences? Here in Colorado, we grow up on lots of
Hispanic cooking, where beans feature prominently. Thus, most of us like
beans. In other areas of the country, maybe not so much? Just a thought.
