Phil Brown Said:
Mike has some great ideas for trail meals from the grocery store. For
our prep trips this year, we used Philmont food for one just so everyone
could get a sample of what to expect, and used grocery store food for
the rest. Our group always likes summer sausage and cheese for one
lunch on either crackers or bagels.
I couldn't agree more. Philmont is a teaching opportunity, in fact its a
necessity to teach the partipants, youth and adult alike, how to plan,
prepare and generally deal with the realities of back country meal prep.
Consider this - No matter what you do on your shakedowns, your crew will
need to deal with Philfood on their trek ... that being the case they should
get a chance to fully understand what that means in advance. For me it
isn't about the taste, its about the weight, bulk and the prep/clean-up
routine. Sure, the last item can be easily simulated ... but the first two
cannot. Until you've stared 72 philfood bags in the face, you can't
understand what it means. After that, then its about taking the opportunity
to demonstrate how you may be able to do it better yourself, using easily
available items ... and then do so. In fact Philmont does just that ...
much of their stuff isn't traditional backpacking stuff, rather off the
shelf items.
