Stripping of supplied food is an invaluable necessity at Philmont. At each
food pick up (including the first) we took out the items that MOST people would
not want and got rid of it (or gave it to someone who would carry it). Left
the dinners alone for the most part. Mostly, this involves drinks and
oatmeal. (BTW...had a boy on this trek who LOVED oatmeal and ate it 3 or 4 bags at a
time, cold, and would take any he could find. Interesting.)
We also did something that really ticked off our sister crew's Ranger (since
we had trained together). We labeled our meals (except dinners) with the
"brand" of the 2 people who would eat it. They then carried it, and could eat
whatever meal they wanted, at breakfast and lunch, whenever they wanted. He said
"It messed up the whole Philmont system". Not one of the best Ranger we have
encountered. Guess he wanted us all to eat the same breakfast and lunch each
day. Wasn't our first rodeo! This had worked on a previous trek and we used
it again.
