Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Inedible Trail Food???

It should be achievable to enjoy meals on the trail as satisfying as the
meals you prepare and enjoy at home.

It is a sign of superior skill to be able to prepare meals in the out of
doors
that are nutritious, visually appealing and filled with good aroma and
flavor.

The rangers at Philmont sometimes will prepare a special dish, often a
cobbler,
to show that eating in the out of doors can and should be an enjoyable
experience.

The Philmont meals are really just a set of basic building blocks. You
should
plan and practice cooking trail meals that will put a smile on the face of
every crew member. You do this by planning and practice before you are on
the trail.

There are a lot of resources for great outdoor cooking. One book
that's worth taking a look at is described at:

A wide variety of backpacker recipes will be found at:

http://www.netwoods.com/d-cooking.html
http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/8099.asp

Some dutch oven recipes are at

http://www.macscouter.com/Cooking/AdditionalRecipes.html

I remember enjoying the sopapillas
(http://www.macscouter.com/Cooking/AdditionalRecipes.html#A14)
on my first Philmont trip.

Experiment before the high adventure trip, as others have
reported doing, to find what works best for you. Tastes vary and no
one enjoys eating the same thing repeatedly, so build up
a repetoire of backpacking meals that you can depend on when you
are on the trail. The trail is not the place to experiment with recipes.
The trail is where you execute great recipes you have mastered and
you are sure will please.

Be sure you have plenty of food, too. It's easy to underestimate how
much more you will need when you are on a strenuous backpacking trip
compared to what you need when doing more sedentary work.

When you are at a staffed camp at Philmont, invite the staff to join you
for dinner, to show off your culinary skill. It will be appreciated and the
word will get around that your crew really knows its stuff.

I would be interested in seeing recipes posted which have worked for
Philmont crews. I'll bet there are some good ones out there!
