I don't know about your email client, but mine, when turned on,
does "return receipts" without asking (this behavior is NOT the
same as for "read receipts" which are asked). So I'm not sure
there is a choice. In any case, the fault lies with whoever
sent the message, as that is the one that asks for the return
receipt.
In any case, the fault is really bad behavior by the mail server
software, as the normal specifications for list servs is that
requests for read receipts, return receipts and delivery receipts
are NOT to be passed through to the list. Whatever implementation
troop47 chose is really to blame. You will note that messages of
this sourt never come through Scouts-L, for instance. In fact, the
mailserv for troop47 is the ONLY one I've ever encountered that
passes those requests through.
However, since we had such a hard time finding a host for the
mailing list, we've all somewhat accepted the quirks of the host
software just so we can have the list.
