I don't know if there is any time that you will likely avoid rain or
have lots of rain. I have done three treks, 620 ('01), 701 ('05), and
708 ('03). 708 was the hottest, driest, dustiest trek of all. We only
got rain on the last afternoon of the last full day on the trail. We
were begging for rain. I'm sure there are people on this list that have
started around 708 on other years that got a lot of rain. The 620 trek
was the wettest one. We got rain about 5 afternoons on that trek with
one real bad hail storm so even on that trek there was not a lot of
rain.
>From reports I have heard, earlier treks tend to have more mosquitoes.
They were supposed to be bad this year, but by our 701 start, we did not
need bug spray but a couple of times.
I would worry more about what works regarding school schedules and the
schedules of the adults than I would trying to outguess the weather.

Subject: [Philmont]: Best Hiking Season at Philmont?
I am in the enviable position of helping the council to request and
arrange
their contingent treks for 2007. We now have to pick dates, without any
input from the future participants. I have been to Philmont twice as an
advisor, both times in late July. Both times, monsoon season. This
time I
am thinking we try for a different time period with perhaps a chance of
less dampness. Because of some early school district startings here in
the
Denver area, I'm not sure I can do VERY late trek starts (like anything
later than Aug 3).
What is everyone's experience with hiking the ranch in early June? Late
June? When does the monsoon season NORMALLY start/end? I know there
can
be snow on the ground and cool nights in early June, but other than
that,
how's the weather (generally). I am intimately familiar with the
weather
here in the Rockies and I know there can be snow falling in July and
drought during monsoon season, but I am just trying to play the
averages.
Any help would be appreciated. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 &
hopefully '07).
