I've heard good things about Alps equipment on this list serve in the past.
Now that the "season" is over, can anyone share any equipment success or
failure stories. Anyone use, specifically, any of the Alps packs, tents or
bags at Philmont and able to share how they're designed and hold up? Most
of my backpacking is done here in Oregon and SW Washington where we have wet
weather in the Spring and Fall (only not as warm as Philmont during the
latter part of the season)

Subject: [Philmont]: "Gearing up"
All,
As our crew enjoyed our trek, we had the opportunity to discuss gear
provisioning with quite a few crews who like us, had more than one member
who really struggled to afford the appropriate gear. I know personally, I
had the "pleasure" of buying two of everything as I was provisioning for my
son too. For those of you preparing for 2006, I figured I'd share our good
fortune with you.
We were fortunate enough to discover Alps Mountaineering's Scout Direct
discount program ( www.alpsmountaineering.com
<http://www.alpsmountaineering.com> & www.scoutdirect.com
<http://www.scoutdirect.com> ) prior to outfitting the crew. We saved a
tremendous amount of money on backpacks, sleeping bags, tents and
compression bags.
We found the quality to be at least as high as other brands. We took
advantage of specials they run in addition to their normal discount as well.
Watch for them....
Yours in Scouting,
Randy Miller
