RE: [Philmont]: "Gearing up"

I personally used a Alps Mystique 2 tent this summer at Philmont for myself and another advisor. Worked well, we thought it was great. However it is not free standing, so if you feel that is a requirement you might want to look at their Taurus model. Not being freestanding was not a problem on trek 11. Also I would suggest bringing additional or different tent pegs. We used gutter nails. Overall, very happy with the Mystique 2.

I'll second that motion. The ordering process is a little convoluted, but the products and the prices are second to none. Leaders, you have the option, once per troop, to try out anything for 60% off list, the rest of the troop, and any subsequent orders are all at 45% off list.

Subject: [Philmont]: "Gearing up"

All,

As our crew enjoyed our trek, we had the opportunity to discuss gear provisioning with quite a few crews who like us, had more than one member who really struggled to afford the appropriate gear. I know personally, I had the "pleasure" of buying two of everything as I was provisioning for my son too. For those of you preparing for 2006, I figured I'd share our good fortune with you.

We were fortunate enough to discover Alps Mountaineering's Scout Direct discount program ( www.alpsmountaineering.com & www.scoutdirect.com) prior to outfitting the crew. We saved a tremendous amount of money on backpacks, sleeping bags, tents and compression bags.

We found the quality to be at least as high as other brands. We took advantage of specials they run in addition to their normal discount as well. Watch for them....

Yours in Scouting,

Randy Miller
