So, anyone want to add a slightly detailed summary of cost of trek so we can
gauge what is doable? List transport cost, "extras" and touring.
I'll Start.
Our total came to $723/person (we charge both the youth and adults). We did
no touring.
We took the train from Fullerton, CA.
I breaks down as follows:
$495 Philmont Fee
$110 Average for Train (youth were all under 16, so they got the AAA
discounted half price at $80 round trip)
$55 T-shirts (two per person and extras for ranger), engraved water
bottles, engraved carabiners
$25 Per person Philbus
$10 Per person extra awards (Philmont burro racing association, 2005
adevnture patch, tooth of time patch, etc.)
$16 Two group meals during transportation, participants paid for all
other meals outside of Philmont
$12 Camping extra night (train arrival) and extra Philmont breakfast
I'm sure some crews include more meals, and if there is touring, there would
be added meals and accommodations, as well as the touring costs.
Hopefully I didn't miss anything. Other than reducing the trek souvenir
costs, I'm not sure we could have cut much out.
By the way, we had pizza delivered to the train in Albuquerque for dinner on
the way back to Fullerton. Other than not getting enough, it worked great.
Kudos to the conductor who helped me figure out who to call (we gave him a
slice). Definitely would consider doing that both ways next time. Another
unit, from San Diego, had gotten cold food to use for dinner, but three of
their boys forgot to pick up food, so we had an extra pizza delivered for
them. I think the rest of their troop was jealous :-). Cost after tip
worked out to $20/large pizza. The train has a 30 minute layover in Alb
going east and schedules 50 minutes going west (refueling, etc.). So you
don't quite have time to go out to dinner, but having pizza delivered worked
great.
The woman running the train station in Raton was awesome. She really took
care of us. We had an adult who could not attend due to business and she
gave us a full refund on his train tickets. The scout "museum" in Raton
wasn't worth the walk.
We seemed to be the only crew that had pockets on our t-shirts. They were
really handy to have.
