[philmont] Backpacks for Skinny Guys

One other thing to consider... (not trying to overstate the obvious)... All backpacks have adjustments for different size waists. Some, however, have additional adjustments that aren't quite so obvious.

We were backpacking on Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior in 2002. My son was 12 and a tall, skinny guy. He literally had no butt. LOL

Needless to say, we experienced some issues with the fully loaded pack that we didn't experience on our shakedowns. The pack kept sliding down and putting all the weight on his shoulders. He was dying.

One of the other adults on the crew discovered some "hidden" adjustments in the waist belt that got everything tightened up and the pack fitting just fine.

He's now 16 years old and 6'4", and although still slender, the pack still fits him. We've had to adjust the shoulder straps and waist belt as he's grown, but he loves his pack and will have it for years.

For those interested, it's a Kelty Red Cloud 5000.

May not work for every pack, but just wanted to let you know the adjustments might not be visible at the first look.

  Guys,
Also be aware that most manufacturers have different size hip belts available but that retailers may not always have them in stock. Check out packs, ask about hip belts and call the manufacuter if possible.

Mike, you are right that the problem should have been discovered on a
shakedown hike. However, this points out a problem that skinny guys
have with backpacks - it is difficult to find one with a hip belt that
fits. Skinny guys will find that backpacks in a women's size will fit
better than men's sizes. Sometimes guys have a problem using a
"woman's" backpack. That's why the advisors need to explain the
seriousness of a properly fitting backpack to the parents, who are
usually buying (or borrowing) the backpack.
