We had a skinny kid in our troop. At the tightest, the buckles bumped up
against the hipbelt padding. I think his Mom did a little creative sewing
afterwards and separated the padding from the webbed belt part so that it
could be pulled just an inch or so tighter. That made all the difference.

Guys,
Also be aware that most manufacturers have different size hip belts
available but that retailers may not always have them in stock. Check out
packs, ask about hip belts and call the manufacuter if possible.

Mike, you are right that the problem should have been discovered on a
shakedown hike. However, this points out a problem that skinny guys
have with backpacks - it is difficult to find one with a hip belt that
fits. Skinny guys will find that backpacks in a women's size will fit
better than men's sizes. Sometimes guys have a problem using a
"woman's" backpack. That's why the advisors need to explain the
seriousness of a properly fitting backpack to the parents, who are
usually buying (or borrowing) the backpack.
