[philmont] blisters

Dave,
I was on trek 3 622-A2. (My rookie trek also..) It was the wettest
drought I have ever seen :) As for blisters and socks.. I only had
the pair on and another in the backpack. They were a thin Smarwool
liner sock and Smartwool Medium Hiking sock.. (I switched from polypro
liner). The wool made a big difference for me.. My feet were dry and
they didn't stink.. I would wear them for 5 straight days with no
problem..and no stink.. I would hang them in the tent to air out at
night.. However as I am sure you will get a couple of emails.. It may be
the boots are not fitted correctly, broke in, etc.. Anyway.. My two
cents and your mileage will vary...

Regards,

..(and yes, I wore a Smartwool Microweight Long sleeve T-Shirt for 5
straight days with no stink either.. It was fast drying when wet, cool
when hot, and warm when cool... I even wear it hear for scouting
activities in FL year-round..)

Amen to the posting below. We just returned from trek 21, 727-h2 and saw
rain most days. We tried to wash socks and clothes and either hang them
up or on packs, but it would rain in the afternoon and never see sun
after that. My son and me went light and took too few socks. Ended up
buying more at Baldy Town. Had blisters from the first couple days
myself, not so much for the rest of the crew. We went through plenty on
band aids, mole skin and duct tape.
Will post a journal soon it there is interest. This was our first time
and would be rookie observations and experiences.

It would be a good idea to carry enough dry socks so that you always
have a dry pair each day of the trek, no matter what happens weatherwise
or otherwise.
These
socks should be carried in something waterproof, like a large ziplock
bag, so no matter what happens to the pack they stay dry. Two pairs for
each day is a good
plan. I admit
this is a lot of socks. The alternative is to wash and dry socks as you
go along.

Socks that take care of your feet are a key to having a successful (and
comfortable :-) ) Philmont Trek.
