Dave-we went in late July in both 2002 and 2004. It can be accurately
described as the beginning of the monsoon season. For the council
contingent, we are leaving in late June, as we figured we'd try to avoid as
much weather as possible. The vagaries of weather are uncontrollable, but
we figured we'd do everything we could to stack the deck in our favor. In
2004, I rinsed my socks out each day and after day 3, I put on my damp
socks each night in my sleeping bag because it was never warm and dry
enough during the day to completely dry them out. Your body heat will dry
them out in your bag, but if you are already cool, I wouldn't recommend it.
I'm NEVER cold, so it worked for me. At least that way I had dry socks
each morning for the day's hiking.
You should have seen us trapped in the sweat lodges at Apache Springs in
our underwear with it hailing and raining cats and dogs outside <g>! It
was OK in the beginning, but once the fires went out and the cold water
rivers run under the edges of the sweat lodge tarps, it got pretty cold.
Finally, we bailed out to the nearby red roof inn to change into our
"always handy" raingear before we had some folks start down the path to
hypothermic <g>! YIS. Mike ('76, '02, '04 and '07).

Amen to the posting below. We just returned from trek 21, 727-h2 and saw
rain most days. We tried to wash socks and clothes and either hang them up
or on packs, but it would rain in the afternoon and never see sun after
that. My son and me went light and took too few socks. Ended up buying more
at Baldy Town. Had blisters from the first couple days myself, not so much
for the rest of the crew. We went through plenty on band aids, mole skin
and
duct tape.
Will post a journal soon it there is interest. This was our first time and
would be rookie observations and experiences.

It would be a good idea to carry enough dry socks so that you always have a
dry pair
each day of the trek, no matter what happens weatherwise or otherwise.
These
socks should be carried in something waterproof, like a large ziplock bag,
so no matter
what happens to the pack they stay dry. Two pairs for each day is a good
plan. I admit
this is a lot of socks. The alternative is to wash and dry socks as you go
along.
Socks that take care of your feet are a key to having a successful (and
comfortable :-) )
Philmont Trek.
