********< update follows >*********
Hello All -
A quick note to update the list on what is happening with our first round of
BSA Leave No Trace Master Educator courses.
"LNT Masters" courses are the highest level of training available in LNT and
graduates are strongly encouraged to return home to conduct as many "LNT
Trainer" courses as possible. The weekend LNT Trainer course graduates are
the very important LNT'ers who will be bringing the LNT message to our
Scouting units and summer camp programs.
Northern Tier National High Adventure Base (Ely, MN) - September 5-10.
We will be doing two BSA LNT Masters courses at the same time - both will
share the first/last days at NT and each will have a completely different
3-day field experience in the middle. Both courses will teach the full LNT
Masters curriculum and each will use the different field experiences to get
a little deeper into different areas of Scouting LNT. Contact NT directly if
interested in either course.
The "paddling trek format" Masters course will spend its field days paddling
and portaging through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This course
is a deep-backcountry course and the full NT backcountry physical is
required. This course might be of particular interest to Scouters who enjoy
high adventure treks and/or who will be involving this kind of high
adventure in their future Scouting and LNT training efforts. There is
currently one slot open in this course.
The "frontcountry format" Masters course will spend its field days doing
activities that are typical for unit weekend outings - Patrol camping (Scout
trailer, chuck boxes, and all), canoe camping (short paddle, no portaging),
and pristine-area backpacking (backpacking camp in pristine area near
vehicles). This course is a "frontcountry" course and a special version of
the NT physical is used (physical conditioning typical for summer camp and
weekend outings is required). This course might be of particular interest to
Scouters who do not choose to do backcountry treks and/or who will be
involving typical unit outing and camp experiences in their future Scouting
and LNT training efforts. This course will spend extra time on presenting
LNT to Cub Scouting audiences. Every effort is being made to make this
course available to those whose physical abilities might not match the
requirements of a LNT Masters course with a backcountry trek format. This
course is operating under a larger group-size restriction and currently has
a half-dozen slots open.
Philmont Training Center (Cimarron, NM) - September 17-22.
We will be doing two BSA LNT Masters courses at the same time - both will
share the first/last days at PTC and then each will spend 3 days backpacking
in the Philmont backcountry (different routes). The full Philmont
backcountry physical will be required. Both courses will teach the full LNT
Masters curriculum and will use the backpacking
experiences to get a little deeper into these areas of Scouting LNT.
The first course filled up quickly and we were able to "double" it - we now
have three slots open in each course. Contact PTC directly if interested in
either course.
We are also offering a 4-day BSA LNT Trainer course at PTC during the same
time. This course is designed for those who want to be free to bring their
families and to enjoy the full "PTC experience" (evenings and Wednesday
available to enjoy other activities). This course might be of particular
interest to those Scouters who want to go into depth on the overall LNT
message and who would enjoy passing this info on to our units, but who have
no interest in conducting the weekend LNT Trainer courses themselves in
their home Council.
Please feel free to email me directly if you have any questions about any of
these courses!
