[philmont] American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid (Philmont requirement)

For 2006, I was able to get 9 out of 12 crew members to complete ARC
Wilderness First Aid (recommended, but not required this year). We offered
the course to all, some weren't able to make it. We also hosted a few
family members and a couple of other Scouters.

Cost? $30 per person, part of the contingent fees.

How? We have a Scouter in our council, and First Aid is his thing. He does
Red Cross (and other 1st Aid) training for his costs, e.g., materials and
ARC "certificate" fees. For our course, I handled the logistics. We held
the course at our Scout office, not in a classroom at our local Red Cross
chapter.

I believe there is at least one Scouter in every area who is "into" First
Aid. Any Police/Fire Dept. Explorers? Help him/her to become an ARC WFA
instructor. You have created a valuable resource. I did it this year
because we were going to Philmont. I am considering working to offer the
course at least annually in our Council because of it's value to Scouting.
Just remember to conduct the course in the Spring; Red Cross volunteers
frequently have other commitments during hurricane season.
