I agree that Amtrack is a great way to travel...
if you are not on a tight time table. I have used Amtrack twice to get to Philmont. Both times Amtrack did not run ontime. In fact, the second time we used it we were running so late on the way back home we would have missed our connection in Chicago and would have had to spend the night in Chicago, something we did not have the money to do. So, we hopped off the train in Kansas City and took the Greyhound the rest of the way home. We arrived back in the Twin Cities on the bus at the time we should have arrived in the Cities if Amtrack ran on time.
Of course, these trips were several years ago. I hope the train system runs on time more these days then it did back then.
I will admit though, we all liked traveling on Amtrack.

Philmont. I just got back from a personal trip from Missouri to
California and back on Amtrak.
I observed four separate contingents going or coming from Philmont on
my train, the Southwest Chief, during the period I was riding. There
may have been others I did not happen to see.
A troop from Buffalo NY (I think) going to Philmont on Saturday, Aug 5
A troop from Orange Co California going back home on Saturday, Aug 5
5 Rivers Council of NY-PA going back home on Monday, Aug 14
A troop from St. Louis (Crew 2467) going back home on Monday, Aug 14
They all seemed to be having a great time.
