Rain Covers: I always pack my sleeping bag in a waterproof stuff sack. No
matter what I want it dry. I also carry my tent in a waterproof stuff sack,
I don't want it leaking on everything. I also carry a pack cover. I
haven't backpacked in the east in a long time, and the salesman's statement
may make sense there. Here, the pines and firs do not take anything off
your pack Also, no matter how waterproof you pack, the straps and other
parts of the bag are not and they will not only get wet, they will retain
water and make the pack heavy and a mess. You will dry out a lot quick than
your straps and padding on a wet backpack.
Besides, putting a large drybag in side sort of eliminates the ideas of
multiple zipper entrances most good backpacks have now days. Several light
colored waterproof ones work better I use waterproof bags for canyoneering,
swamps and jungles in my bag, but that means I'm walking in deep water or
swimming.
Rain Pants: May 15, to Labor I don't carry rain pants here. It doesn't rain
long enough to make them worth the effort. If I start to get really cold
and I've never had that happen in the summer, I put on my wicking long
underwear. Wicking long underwear keeps you warm and dry more ways and more
times than rain pants and are a lot lighter and compact a lot more.

OK, I need advice on 2007.
I bought an Osprey Aether 85 and the guy recommended an internal sack
instead of a rain cover.
His reasoning was that the rain cover would get caught on branches, time to
take your pack off and put the rain cover on, and if it is raining after
hiking the packs are generally under a tarp, and that the trend is going to
internal bags that are water resistant.
Another topic is rain pants. I have been told not to forget them and told to
leave them at home. I just got back from Santa Fe and it rained at 2:00-3:00
every day. If I am not hiking I think that I would want the rain pants.
Thoughts?
