It doesn't make sense in Georgia. I use water proof bags inside the
pack and a pack cover on the outside and they have been needed many times.
As to rain pants.... I'm hot natured and breathable doesn't keep up
with my sweat production - so I seldom use them or the rain top when
hiking. BUT - but there have been a couple of times that being without
the rain top and pants in a cold persistent dry wind or a cold windy
rain would have been been uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst.
For backpacking in the mountains I think rain gear and pack covers are
no-brainers. I also take them when mountain day-hiking. I've seen
too sudden and unpredictable changes in the weather to risk going without.
