Referring back to the original msg from Steve that starting this very
active rain & rain gear thread - gosh, I don't know where your Osprey
guy has been backpacking to talk about a pack rain cover getting
caught on branches. Jim Moss has camped all over the world, spends
half his life in a tent, and if he says he always carries a rain
cover, well, that's pretty strong. Listen to him!
The only time I've ever heard what your Osprey guy said is from the
NOLS instructors in Patagonia. They tell their student campers - no
pack cover, no pack add-ons, doo-dads, and the like. Must use
waterproof bags inside the monster 80 lb. packs they will
carry. NOLS campers spend weeks bushwhacking in dense bamboo rain
forests and thick jungles of Patagonia (Chile) and yes, things like
that would get torn up. But at Philmont, and most routine hiking
venues, this is not the case. And besides, at Philmont you need a
pack cover on your pack in the campsite and overnight. Your pack
won't necessarily be under the dining fly all the time - could be
simply under a tree - depends on the protocol used by the crew, and
other variables.
So I guess you've gotten the word by now - get a pack cover - the
simplest solution. (And use water resistant bags inside for critical
items.) There are lots of new hi-tech cover-fabric options that
weigh almost nothing and occupy space smaller and softer than a
tennis ball when not in use.
Have a great trek in 07.

I bought an Osprey Aether 85 and the guy recommended an internal sack
instead of a rain cover.
His reasoning was that the rain cover would get caught on branches,
time to take your pack off and put the rain cover on, and if it is
raining after hiking the packs are generally under a tarp, and that
the trend is going to internal bags that are water resistant.
