I've never used the long gaiters, only the low ones, but I used them
frequently at Philmont. I find that they keep the small pebbles, gravel
and sand out of my boots, and also keep my socks a little cleaner. I
also use them on day hikes, especially with low-cut trail shoes. There
are trails/roads - Tooth Ridge, the Ponil-to-Pueblano burro route to
name a couple - that I've learned are definite "gaiter routes". And the
roads tend to be worse than most trails.
