I use Space bags, available at www.spacebag.com. They come in a variety of sizes and you can squeeze the air out through the one way valve by rolling up the bag (these are not the kind that require a vacuum cleaner). I ordered a set on a whim in 2001 from a TV infomercial. The original bags held up through three autumn adventure trips, as well as multiple weekend and other summer treks. They finally gave out this year and I ordered a brand new set.
They are waterproof (since they're airtight) and clear, so you can see what's inside. There is even one bag large enough to compress a down vest. When you place the clothes in, seal it (much like a Ziplock) and then roll it to get out the air, it stays rolled. Very compact. They also work in the winter without becoming brittle.
Give them a try.
