I had the privilege to take 3 treks at Philmont during the summer but now
may have the opportunity to do an all adult Autumn Adventure trek. Our
primary goal will be to see the color of Philmont, especially the Aspens.
Since my last trek I've turned 50 and the old memory ain't what it used to
be. I would appreciate advice from Calvin or Al or anyone on where to go to
see a lot of Aspens.
I remember the hike from Miner's park to Black Mountain, especially along
the creek with it's 48 or so crossings, was very scenic and may try to work
in that hike as well. Miranda had a large Aspen grove as well.
We're not sure at this time whether we'll set up a base camp or backpack the
entire 5 or 6 days. Thanks for any advice.

Regarding color:
Our mid September 2004 trip was a northern route, and the colors were
absolutely breathtaking on Baldy - see
http://www.watchu.org/images/AA/fall_colors.jpg for a sample, and I've rolls
just like it.
Our mid September 2002 trip was a southern route, and the trees were just
beginning to turn.
Our early October 2000 trip had both southern and northern legs to it - the
colors were a little past peak in the south (along the Rayado), and the
aspen leaves were on the ground on Baldy.
So generalizing, where to go to see color will depend on when you go, and
you will need to go in the middle of the Autumn Adventure season, not the
beginning or end.
One beauty of Autumn Adventure is planning your own route, and deciding how
aggressive or how laid back you want to be.
We have always backpacked camp to camp, with one layover day used to
sidehike a peak - Baldy twice, Trail Peak the other. Though no layover
planned this year, as we will be going over Phillips and camping there.
