Greetings list –
Dry bags – picked up mine at OR in Seattle at their yearly sale back in
July. These look just like the heavy dry bags you might take on a canoe
trip – but lighter in fabric weight yet just as water tight. The flagship
store in Seattle has a section that they feed with seasonal closeout items
where you might find sales prices even now. Used a whole bag/sack for the
main compartment of my backpack, one for my tent and another for my sleeping
bag – smaller sizes for clothes and ditty bags.

They also had mountains of gaiters – couldn’t have sold them all. One of my
sons picked up a pair of long-Alpine length in green and brown camo – how
can you pass those up? Gaiters are also a nice short pants combo for warmth
in early mornings – helps to warm up older legs while keeping out trail
duff. Boots vary in ankle height and fit. My Merrels have broken in to fit
my feet but don’t have the tightest of fits at the ankle. At days end if I
don’t hike with gaiters I have to rub off the fir and pine needles, small
rocks and twigs from my socks. I vote for gaiters for wet or dry hikes.
