On the dry sack front, I found very large ziploc bags, called "big
bags" at my local grocery store. They came 4 to a package. They are
about 20 inches deep and about 24 wide, with a pleated bottom. I
thought: 'Why not" and tried them out in my Ariel (Osprey) pack on a
week long trek this summer. The bags are slightly blue tinted, but
easy to see thru and one fit just fine inside the main compartment of
my pack. I carried a couple of spare smaller zip locs for heavily
soiled or wet items, but otherwise just packed all my clothes and other
items where wet would be a problem inside the large bag.
I experienced the usual problem with ziplocs--gettting all the air out,
but otherwise, the system worked just fine. I use a pack cover, too,
but I'm pretty sold on this method as opposed to more smaller ziplocs.
The only other disadvantage is that you lose the ability to cram small
items into nooks and crannies of the pack, but the ziploc is tough and
can conform fairly easily around pots, stoves, water bottles, etc.,
that might happen to be in the main compartment. I continued to pack
food on the outside of the big ziploc--no sense in walking around like
bait.
Can't remember now what I paid for them, but I'll bet it was a lot less
than a dry sack...
