[Philmont] Exp#727-h2 Trek 21 Journal - comment on maps

Greetings All,

First, for those who may not be aware of the change, Philmont went from
three sectionals (South, Central, North) plus Valle Vidal to four
regionals (SW, SE, NW, NE) plus Valle Vidal. They are a little easier
to manage if you are like many crews and don't want to cut off the
pieces of the map you aren't going to be using. The maps are folded
rather than full sheets and are a waterproof (resistant) platicized
paper. They also have UTM coordinates/grids and the Philmont GIS folks
have done a pretty good job of making sure the trails are properly
indicated.

And, at least when we were there, they do sell the larger scale -
1:24,000 - maps at the commissaries; at least they were selling them at
Baldy Town and Ute Gulch. They are $3.00 a pop.

One comment on this, based on the experience of a crew we met on the
trail, I would recommend that you get the sectional maps (3 sections of
the ranch, get the one or ones you need) and not just the overall map.
There is much greater trail detail shown on the sectional maps.
