Yes

No

Garmin Vista

1 pair of Lithium per 2 days

Yes and the topo maps for Philmont

No, because the Scouts needed to use their navigation skills. You can make a wrong decision with a GPS.

I turned on the GPS at breakfast each day and turned it off at the completion of the day's hike. I had it on for the side hikes and conservation project. After I turned in on and acquired the satellites I put it on the top of my back pack so I would not have to hold it and it would have the best view of the sky. The Scouts would ask me how far to the next campsite and I would tell the followed by as the crow flies. After the first day anytime they asked the question and I replied with the mileage they responded with "As the crow flies". I never left it in the goto mode because it drains the battery at a faster rate. At the end of the day I saved the track. In the morning when I turned it on I cleared the previous day's information and started the same process again. Since my GPS will only save 10 track I said our two day lay over as one. When I got home I uploaded it to a mapping program to see what we did. Once again I did not use it for navigation, but for recreation.
