Subject: [Philmont] For all those that have used a GPS at Philmont
For those of you that have used a GPS at Philmont I would be interested in
hearing about how you used them.
Did you leave it on all day and track log your entire trip?
>> Yes
Did you just mark locations such as camps, trail intersections, etc?
>> Some
What unit did you take?
>> Garmin VistaC
How many batteries did you take, was it enough/to many?
>> 7 sets of the Energizer Lithium - used 4 sets but only because I left the
unit on overnight ... twice ...
Did you load waypoints from the internet before you left?
>> yup
Did you actually use it for navigation or more as a toy?
>> Except for the Valle, you don't need it for navigation. We did use it to
verify our location on maps, and to check elevation when climbing
Any other usefull information would be appreciated.
>> It would have been more useful had I loaded the underlying map graphics
prior to departure.
>> Turning off the compass saves poswer ... I left mine on
Not to be rude, but I'm not interested in hearing opinions as to whether or
not they are useful or should be carried at Philmont.
Thanks,
Steve
