Steve,
I have used a Garmin GPSMAP 60CS for 3 treks. Each time I have used lithium batteries and I started with 2 new AA lithium batteries and changed them one time with power to spare. I carried 1 four pack and brought 2 home unused.
Like Bob mentioned I would turn it on when we were about to depart and lock in the satellite and then when we reached our next camp (or completed side hike (baldy)) I would save the track and clear the memory for the next day.
We did not use it for navigation, but I occasionally checked the unit for info. What I used the tracks for was to create a custom map of our trek with Garmin topo and Delorme Topo USA (3D) software to give to the participants, check mileage and create statistics.
I have the data for 3 treks. Treks 24 (pre greenwood canyon), 9 and 11.

Subject: [Philmont] RE: For all those that have used a GPS at Philmont
Thanks for the replies about the GPS use. The reason I asked is two-fold.
First I am going to Philmont next summer and am taking my GPS (Garmin
gpsmap60c) and am not sure about batteries. I'm hoping to record the whole
trek. Second I am building a large gps file sharing website where users can
upload and download gps files of either locations or routes. I will have
information about all and downloadable gps files for almost all state and
national parks. One category I will have is for scouting related locations
and routes.
Thanks again for the input.
Steve
