I have used a GPS at Philmont, twice, and it was just a toy. Mine does not have maps. I made waypoints for each camp, but never needed them. I really did not enjoy it at Philmont because I don't want to play with a computer at Philmont, I want to enjoy the outdoors and the scouts. So I left it in the pack most of the time. I do have a nice waypoint in my GPS for Mt. Phillips now, so this summer I could tell how far Northern Tier was from Philmont. But that is just fun. I also have an AltiTech watch and compass. That device was the most fun because it constantly graphed altitude, and we could see on a graph how much we climbed. Also, altitude really helped us find ourselves on a map. I will probably take the GPS back to Philmont next July. Although I want to carry the bear minimum, it is hard to resist.
I don't use a GPS or a map and compass to find my way around Philmont, I follow the kid who has the map and compass. Although I will put in my two cents, and if they try to walk down the road from Backache Springs again I am going to run screaming down the trail.
