[philmont] Chairs

It's worth suggesting that an alternative to buying a ready made chair is to
roll your own. Some cloth, some tubing and a heavy duty needle and thread
can allow you to construct a foldable chair that will fit you exactly the
way you want to be fitted, because you build it to your own specs.

On the other hand, locally (north of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania) Dick's
Sporting Goods is running a sale on foldable camp chairs in all sorts of
colors and sizes at ridiculously low prices (around $25.00), which look like
they would be great for backpacking.

The idea of a camp chair for backpacking is a rock solid idea, second only
perhaps to the use of a foam ground pad to keep you comfortable when sacked
out in your sleeping bag.

In this same line, the shoulder straps on a backpack are important to get
right to keep your shoulders from aching. The principle to apply is to get
the strap(s) or strap pads wide enough to keep from cutting and rubbing into
your shoulders. It helps to have a backpack that is fitted to you and has a
broad waist belt to keep the pack from riding on your shoulders.

Philmont backpacking is plenty strenuous and tiring at times, and getting
the chair, foam pad, shoulder straps and pack riding right will help
tremendously.

Test all these items in a shakedown trip before Philmont.
