I once read that New Mexico and Florida are the states with the highest
number of lightening strikes and the highest number of people hit by
lightening. I don’t remember which was which, but either way it should be
cause for thought.
Also, on my trek in 1996, our ranger covered lightening procedure in detail.
  (We were not headed to Baldy.) As we were approaching Beatty Lakes, a
storm began to brew. We all hit the lightening position while still in the
trees and stayed there for over an hour. One of my favorite crew pics is
all of us demonstrating the lightening position on a clear night!
I will only briefly say that it took one strike hitting a tree near our
cabin at Head of Dean in 1997 to make me truly understand that those pretty
flashes are truly electric!
As Mr LeBlanc said, this is probably more preaching to the choir…
