[philmont] More information on trek 31

I agree with Keith. We did Itinerary 28, which is about the last Strenuous
itinerary before you go to Super Strenuous. The high number itineraries
are for folks who like to hike and are good at it. We ended up doing about
106 miles in our trek (after adding some program). That is a bunch of
hours on the trail. To help with the "rushed program" feeling, I can offer
two suggestions:

1. Encourage your crew chief to start real early in the morning and get
your hiking done. Find you best pacer (not too fast, not too slow) and use
them. We had a different pace person for uphill and downhill. That is
what worked for us.

2. Plan, plan, plan each day. Work with the crew chief to set reasonable
goals regarding hiking times, break times, meal times, program times, water
availability, time to setup camp, division of duties, etc. One of our
advisors said she would buy the crew ice cream in base camp if they could
be up and out of camp within 45 minutes one morning (it had been taking us
close to an hour and 15 minutes previously). Funny, that morning we did in
45 minutes. After that day, we ALWAYS made it in 45 minutes, sometimes
less.

Like I said, we did over 100 miles and we NEVER missed program. In fact,
we added program. What we found is that the more hours on the trail just
cut down on the amount of "grab butt" time in camp. A certain amount of
that is needed for folks to decompress, but like our crew chief told our
crew "you can sleep at home, you can play cards at home, you can goof off
at home! We're at Philmont, and we want to do as much program as we can
and see as much of the Ranch as we can in our 10 days". We still had more
than enough down time, even with 100+ miles. Of course, a medical issue
can trump all of the above, so it is another advertisement for every trek
member being in TERRIFIC shape if you are attempting a more rugged
itinerary. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 and '07).

To everyone who wrote to me about my "Random thoughts on trek 31", thanks,
I
appreciate your responses. I realize the 2007 Philmont season is about up,

but is there anyone who has any specific question about the trek that I can

answer?

Although this was my 6th trek, it was my first super-strenous. My only
regret is that the time required for hiking made us feel rushed when trying

to fit program in.
