[philmont] Lightning Safety Resources

I work for the US Dept of Energy, in the safety and
health end of our operations. We have had some
engineers from the Lightning Safety Institute in
Louisville, CO, talk with us about lightning safety.
As others have recently stated on this list, it's a
matter of risk reduction - there really are no
absolutes. The best way is to avoid the places where
the most vulnerability exists, such as being on high
open areas when thunder can be heard.

Here are some references on this subject. There are
some links to occurrences of lightning-strike
incidents, including the one last weekend at Philmont.

Did anyone see the article in the July issue of
Outside Magazine by Annette McGivney, blasting
Scouting for our safety record? A link to it is below.
She has some relevant points, but her last words about
the Scouts' policies toward atheism seem to indicate
she has an axe to grind, and she's not very accurate
or complete regarding the accident record or the
comparison of accidents to the volume of our
activities.

All accidents are bad, but I think we do a pretty good
job in preventing them.
