Keith and others make some good points. We took old trek 5, a "typical"
trek and our next to last day we had to go from Cito to Tooth Ridge camp. It
was a long hot day when we got there. Ours was a "typical" trek, but there are
a lot of miles, and altitude change on that day. There are also several
"typical" treks that send you up Tooth Ridge and on into base camp on your last
day. That is a long hard trip.

Joe, it's a subjective judgment on the part of Philmont, but mostly it's
additional mileage and more climbing. Our trek went over Baldy, Comanche,
Philips, Big Red, Black Mountain, Schaefer's and the Tooth. On paper, I think it
was officially an 83-mile trek, but with our side hikes it came out to be
about 102. We had a couple of 14-15 mile days. About the only program
opportunity we missed was the mine tour at French Henry on our way back to camp from
Baldy.
