[philmont] Last full crew / Backcountry soda and candy

Our trek was back in June - 623-M1 and we enjoyed itinerary 9.

The only trading posts we came across were at Baldy Town and Ponil on this
itinerary and were the only places where crew members could purchase
anything.

We also went through staff camps at Dan Beard, Rich Cabins, French Henry and
Miranda where NOTHING was available for purchase, except you could get gas
at Rich Cabins. Rich Cabins and Baldy Town were our commissary stops.

I remember a sign at Baldy Town offered to charge items...I suppose this
meant large ticket items.

The TP at Baldy Town was small and the TP at Ponil had a wider selection.

The Root Beet in the Cantina at Ponil was a it!

Good luck and have a GREAT Trek.

Subject: [philmont] Last full crew / Backcountry soda and candy

Well, our group of first timers will soon be off to Philmont as crew 809-K4.
I believe we will be the last 2007 crew out for the full 10 nights in the
backcountry! Hopefully the programs and staff will be almost as fresh and
enthusiastic as they were back in June.

Until recently, we had a full crew of twelve. Unfortunately, one of our
scouts was in a car accident and broke his arm in two places. Drew was the
only scout not part of our local troop, but he is a great kid and he was
well respected by everyone. Due to the timing and severity of the break,
his orthopedist and the Philmont med staff unanimously agreed that Philmont
was not an option this summer. We will all miss him on the trail.

Another crew from town recently returned from their trek and they had a
great time. Some of the scouts from the other crew have been suggesting to
our guys that they bring plenty of money to the backcountry because all of
the staffed camps were selling soda and candy. I told our crew that the
other scouts were spreading a false rumor. Now that I think about it, I
believe the other crew's trek took them through the cantina at Ponil and I
saw an earlier post that said Toblerones were available in at least one
backcountry commissary. So, they may have had a root beer and a candy. Can
anyone tell me if there is anything more to this soda/candy rumor? I have
been telling our scouts to bring very little money in the backcountry
because they will have almost nothing to buy on our trek. If I am the one
giving the bad information, and they miss a purchase opportunity due to lack
of funds, I know our scouts will find nice ways to make me miserable for the
rest of the trek. :)

On a side note, I have been primarily a lurker on this list for the last
nine months. The posts have been an invaluable aid in preparation for our
trek. Thanks to all.
