[philmont] Trek 9 just retruned.

We did trek 9 and only took that trail downhill from Greenwood canyon do to Copper Park.
The next morning we had a Dad who refused to go up to steep Northern ascent to Baldy
since he believed that it was tooo dangerous. He wanted us to hike around to the Southern face and do
that trail. The crew was gung ho to do the Northern face steep ascent so that's what we did.

If I had seen that switchback as an option then I would have suggested it to the trek leader.
Our sister crew took that option and we beat them to Baldytown after the Alpine meadow
lunch -- if fact we got to Baldytown, resupplied, showered and were shouldering packs as
they tromped in. We made French Henry; they were tooo tired -- our scouts were 14-15 year olds
theirs were 15-17 year-olds.

We were also on Itinerary 9 and took the same route to Baldy. They crew stopped just outside of the tree line and had a cool snowball fight. One crew member even built a small snowman! Our trek was 623 M1

Walking up the ridgeline, I felt like I was in the Sound of Music! The views were Awesome!

Thanks,

The new trail is well marked as additional post indicate. If you are leaving Copper park and going up the switchbacks once at the top the trail is to your left. It is marked with rock caroms. It is somewhat steep until you get to the top of the ridge then it follows the ridge line to Baldy. Great views. I really enjoyed the option vs the old trail that is directly up the face of Baldy.

If you are coming from Greenwood Canyon it is on your right at the low gap before you proceed down to Copper Park. There are 17 switchbacks from the Gap down to Copper Park. The old trail is blocked off and not to be used.

We left Copper Park at 7:00 a.m., stopped and had breakfast at the gap and then proceeded to Baldy. We arrived on top by 10:00 a.m. Estimated time you should allow is 2.5 to 3 hours.
