I have been reading with interest all of the chatter about crews and candy
in the backcountry with interest.
We must have been on a very special crew, because we had none of the
problems many have been speaking of with the candy.
I carried some Starburst and gave each Scout about 3-4 pieces after our hard
climb out of Greenwood Canyon to Copper Park. The next day was another hard
climb that took us to Baldy and then down to Baldy Town for a food resupply
and it is where we encountered our first trading post. Some of the crew
bout Toblerone and ate it there, no problems carrying it their pack back to
Copper Park, in fact I don't even think they considered it. We were very
rigorous in our bear precautions and the fact that we had seen a couple
bears may have added to the caution. I saw the candy as a welcome treat.
It was a couple days later that the guys would be scarfing up some more
Toblerone and a whole bunch of root beer at Ponil.
For a bunch of guys it was a first on two accounts. Some were gulping down
root beer when they wouldn't have touched it back home and the same for the
candy.
I guess we had some special guys on our crew!
