[philmont] Solo hikes

I used to teach science in public school before I got a real job.

Being the humorist I am, my favorite thing to say on a teacher work day was
"man this job would be great if it was like this every day" meaning that without
500 teenagers around you could really get things done. Most of the people
around just howled at the humor, but the few sticks in the mud thought I was an idiot. To them I used to say "well, there are learners, fast learners and slow learners, I think I know the problem.

The coaches were a bit more blunt. Their comment to Miss Prunella and Mr. Nerd was simply "I think they rode the short bus to school".

But I do understand where Calvin is coming from. I'm an old solo woods walker and there is nothing more peaceful that to have a mountain valley all to yourself.

Those who have read Colin Fletchers writings know he was a big fan or being alone in the wilds.

There is just something about it that fixes the soul.

Now if I can just get Calvin and company to take my wife and get out of the Miranda valley this September (i.e. go take a hike) and leave me alone for the day, my soul will get fixed.

Autumn Adventure is next! This will be our 9th all-adult Autumn Adventure
trek. Philmont is always special but it really is paradise when there are
no Scouts about (VBG).
