[philmont] autumn adventure

Calvin wrote that Philmont is truly a paradise when there are no Scouts around. While we all enjoy the positive feedback from our Scouts when we introduce them to something new and exciting, particularly something as new and exciting as Waite Phillips' gift to Scouting, I know what he is talking about.

Philmont is a very special place when you can enjoy it with just your crew, the usual experience on Autumn Adventure trips. Seeing one other crew in a week is cause for remark. It is still an underutilized program and I urge any scouters to take advantage of this unique experience to recharge your scouting batteries.

The major thing that is lifted off your back on an all-adult trek is the responsibility of being in loco parentis for boys that "belong" to someone else. It's also nice to be free of the need for duty rosters, as my experience is that adult scouters all pitch in. Freedom from having to bust a gut to keep up with teenage roadrunners, clad in BSA khaki, is also a plus. Camping with those who have lived the Scout Oath and Law for 30, 40 or 50 years rather than riding herd on those new to the concept has its advantages, as well.

For all of the above reasons, I recommend an all-adult Autumn Adventure trip. It won't take the place of the regular outings with the boys, but it is an excellent supplement.
