        Joe,

That's an excellent resource. It's in it's umpteenth printing since first produced bback in the early 50's. Another good resource is the trail description booklet Philmont produced back in the 50's when crews designed their own iteneraries. Actually you just picked where you wanted to go from the map and trail description. The description of the trail from camp to camp includes tidbits of geology and also biology along the trail.

Somehow we miss out on this today hurrying along the trail to get to the next program or chalking up more miles on Super Strenuous treks. I'm not criticizing the program Philmont does as it is excellent, but.........

In those days, the fire building, cooking and such WAS the program. Building a fire to cook on after an all day PhilRain separates the men from the boys so to speak, that is unless you wanna eat cold undehydrated food. Back in those days we did not have freeze dried, just add hot water and eat food.

You either cooked it and ate or it ate you.

Good post on a good reference book.
