but there is much more to geology at Philmont that the USGS booklet will help Scouts learn about.
It would be worth having every Scout Council check to see what resources ("Know and Use Your Resources") are available for learning about the geology, wildlife, flowers, trees, and so forth for
their local territory.
These days with the Internet and search engines this kind of material is more readily available than in the past.

Joe,
You are absolutely right. Being a biologist < am opne to appreciate the value in the natural world. However TV being what it is, the emphasis today is on sports. After all where else can one cheat and win? And win so big?
OK, enough on that.
But really about 99% of those going to Philmont want to hike the most, the fartherist, the earliest, the longest. Very few want to sit down and figure out what species tree it is by using a plant key or what kind or rock it is.
We have put so much emphaiss on win, win, win and that is the result of it.
But............................we can change that..................one step at a time just as you have done with your post.
