<snip> Another good resource is the trail description booklet Philmont produced back in the 50's when crews designed their own iteneraries.? Actually you just picked where you wanted to go from the map and trail description.? The description of the trail from camp to camp includes tidbits of geology and also biology along the trail.

Comments...

The first was produced about 1958 - I saw the original manuscript for it in the Seton Library last summer, and there were a couple of updates; the first for the Baldy acquistion.? Several are posted at http://philmontdocs.watchu.org/itineraries.htm?(all the way to the bottom of the page, after all the TREKS and PEAKS books).

Just the other day I commented to someone with a copy of the first version that I believe Philmont could sell at least one copy of such a trail guide to every crew, every year, if they updated it and produced it.? And with all the GIS data they now have for the Ranch, that should not be too difficult.

Not to mention the AA crews...? In the meantime, I'm going to be a guinea pig get an early start on '08 with Jim's new toy!
