Home now in San Diego, trying to catch up with everything since MON. we were on Trek #12, and enjoyed the company of a crew (from 2 troops) in the Sacramento area. Rain 8 out of 10 days, though only really bad one afternoon, and 2 nights. My least favorite camp, Commanche Camp. That was the night we had to dry out boots and socks from the rain that afternoon hiking north from Phillips Junction. BEST part of trek for CREW --- Hunting Lodge. It started to rain really hard during Advisor coffee. Boys were coming up for cobbler made by staff. It rained so hard, the staff invited us (and crew on same trek 12) IN to the Hunting Lodge. Steaff lit a fire in the fireplace and lanterns. Boys played cards, chess, scrabble IN the hunting lodge during the rain storm. Lots of thunder and lightening that night. A really special night.
My #2 best part was hiking with my 24 yr old son. He filled in at the last minute (3 weeks before) as our 3rd advisor, drove down from Denver and met us at Philmont. It was actually the most time I have spent with him in the last 5 or 6 yr. We went to some of the same places as our trek in 1999, many others that were new. He was great with the scouts, most had only "met" him once, a yr ago as MC of his younger brother's Eagle COH. It was fun to hear his troop stories he shared with the boys, and also see him encourage their skills, leadership, and working as a team. He really enjoyed the sunrises/sunsets (especially on the Tooth of Time), fishing, and the beauty that is Philmont.
WORST -- hiking a mile past the trail to go shoot 30.06 at Sawmill...............almost looked like someone had taken the sign off the post threw it on he ground upside down behind post on purpose. ALSO, loud music and unfriendly staff at Cimarroncito.........noted that one on our comments sheet.
Conservation was not bad. trimming and sorting branches/trees stumps between Cimarroncito and Hunting Lodge. We were there mid day, and able to move tree limbs to shade to cut and make various piles, according to size.
all stayed healthy, good trip home too. Health wise, this was a challenging group, 2 really small boys (one with great determination, the other our strongest hiker). Our scout with diabetes had food/insulin figured out by the 3rd day. The worst meal for him was the one with the apple cobbler and fettucine.
Boys already wanting to plan a Sierra trek in northern California for next summer. THANKS again to all in this group for sharing your wealth of Philmont knowledge. This was my 3rd trek at Philmont, but I learn something new each time.Kim Pigorsch Philmont '99, '03, '07 (724-Taco) Troop 681 Outdoor Chairmun (sic) www.troop681.com - troop website www.sdicbsa.org - Council Website San Diego, CA
